The Lessons by Naomi Alderman

The storyline seemed very familiar; a disparate group of first years at Oxford are invited to share a rundown mansion with fellow student Mark - wealthy, fragile and promiscuously gay. But what differentiated this novel, and had my nose firmly stuck in it for 2 days, was the quality of the writing.  The dynamics of the group, first at college and then in the ensuing years, was so well drawn for the reader - their aspirations, secrets and betrayals. The 'lessons of life' learnt, and ignored.

This is Alderman's second novel. She was named Young Writer of the Year after publication of her debut novel Disobedience.
